Methodology
First of all, let me briefly explain the framework of my working method and give an overall definition of Psychology as the science that studies the human mind and behaviour.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
In this field, the figure of the psychologist is considered to be a scientist since we seek to understand the role of mental functions in individual and social behaviour and explore concepts such as perception, cognition, attention, emotion, motivation, personality, behaviour and interpersonal relationships. In this sense, psychological treatment or psychotherapy is the task performed by a psychologist to understand and change behaviours, feelings and ways of thinking that interfere with one’s daily life. Having said that, nowadays there are several trends and schools of psychotherapy whereby each of them explains different psychological problems and treat them according to their theoretical model.
There are many currents and schools of psychotherapy and each one of them explains different psychological problems and treats them according to its theoretical model. However, not all psychotherapies have the same degree of scientific validity and, therefore, it is not possible to say at present that they are all effective.
The approach that I follow is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a highly effective and scientifically proven treatment for emotional problems such as depression, anxiety, chronic pain, insomnia and other mental disorders. CBT supports the hypothesis that the emotions we experience and the way we behave are largely determined by the way we think and perceive situations.
If our perception of a situation is negative, this will lead to negative emotions and negative behaviour. This is why it can be said that in general terms, emotional disorders derive from negative and unrealistic thinking. By challenging our negative thinking process, it is possible to reduce the emotional impact of stressful events.
However, cognitive-behavioural therapy does not consist of thinking “positively” but rather of thinking realistically and logically about situations that are experienced as distressing or worrying. Much of CBT treatment is based on the here and now, and its aim is to help you achieve the desired changes in your life. Therefore, the intervention focuses on the opportunity to learn new adaptation and problem-solving strategies.
Have you ever felt yourself fighting against uncomfortable or painful feelings? Or with difficulties in facing a problem that never leaves you at peace? Or do you find that you keep repeating the same self-destructive patterns and don’t seem to manage to break the vicious circle?
The goal of cognitive-behavioural therapy is:
Alleviating the symptoms and resolving the problems that arise
To help modify underlying cognitive assumptions to prevent relapses.
To help acquire new skills and coping strategies.
My task is therefore to help you to modify the thoughts and behaviours that prevent you from having healthy functioning. CBT emphasises the collaborative aspect of the therapist-client relationship. This means that all aspects of the therapy are made explicit and that we will work together to plan strategies to solve the problems and achieve the therapeutic objectives explicitly agreed. This also means that different tasks have to be carried out between sessions in order to practice and consolidate the strategies.
CBT has proven to be of great help to a large number of patients in a limited and relatively short period of time (depending on the disorder). If anyone is sceptical about this type of approach, think that there are millions of people who have benefited from this type of intervention. I would simply recommend doing a test within a limited period of time to see if this treatment could be the right one for you. There is nothing to lose and … a lot to win! All sessions take place at the Centre Mèdic Teknon.
Your privacy and confidentiality are a fundamental part of my clinical practice. CBT is not a miraculous cure but rather a way of learning new ways of thinking and functioning that require practice. Through therapy you will work towards specific objectives, progressively becoming your own therapists.
